In 1759, Francesco Drioli, a Venetian merchant, began industrial-scale production of maraschino in Zadar, Croatia, which was then part of the Republic of Venice. Drioli displayed that Venetian entrepreneurial spirit that had transformed the popular tradition of home distillation of grappa in the Veneto into a refined and renowned industry, following clear and distinct rules and restrictions, as set down by the Arte dell’acqua di vita.[2]

In the first advertisement in the London Morning Post and Daily Advertiser, dated 17 June 1779, the firm Johnson and Justerini informed ’the nobility and gentry’ of having ’just imported a large quantity of maraschino from Zara .. of the most exquisite flavour’ and in 1804 the Austrian Emperor granted the factory the title Imperial Regia Privilegiata entitling it to use the Imperial coat of arms.[4] The liqueur was sought after by distinguished personages, rulers and courts from all over Europe and the Francesco Drioli factory held Royal Warrants, entitling them to use the royal coat of arms, from the royal households of Austria, Great Britain and Italy. British warships were sent from bases in Corfù and Malta to pick up shipments of maraschino for British royalty. In fact in 1877 the Duke of York (the future George V) and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the factory and accepted ’with great pleasure a choice buffet’ in the Salghetti-Drioli family home and purchased ’more cases of rosolio and several jars of maraschino cherries’ (Il Dalmata, a. As the reputation of Maraschino grew, so did the name of Zadar, which prompted other factories to emerge and become established, particularly those of Girolamo Luxardo (1821) and Romano Vlahov (1861). In the immediate post-war period the owners of the three most important distilleries, Vittorio Salghetti-Drioli, Giorgio Luxardo and Romano Vlahov, sought refuge in Italy and rebuilt their businesses in Mira, near Venice, Torreglia near Padua and Bologna respectively. By 1946 Vittorio had already resumed production and soon recaptured the company’s traditional markets worldwide, in particular the English and English-speaking areas. He expertly reconciled his factory’s long-standing and prestigious tradition with the demands for modernisation which such a radically altered post-war period called for. The death of Vittorio Salghetti-Drioli, sixth and last heir of the Dalmatian branch of the historic founding family of the maraschino industry of Zadar, not only saw the extinction of this branch of the family, but also the end of the two-hundred year history of the Francesco Drioli factory, the oldest Italian liqueur company. After his death in 1974, his heirs set up Distillerie Venete Mira Spa (DI. VE. MI) with the Società Finanziaria Europea. The company was transferred to this new group while ownership of the factory, the brands, and the recipes was retained, and the use of the latter was authorised. In 1980 the Board of Directors decided to cease production and the company went into liquidation.[12]
The valuable Salghetti-Drioli archive, which dates from the second half of the 18th century up to 1943, stands as testimony to the history of the maraschino of Zadar. The section preserved by the family in Vicenza was designated of ’great historical interest’ by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 1991, and has been catalogued by Prof. Georgetta Bonfiglio-Dosio.[13] The section remaining in Zadar, which was confiscated after the war and the transition of Zadar to Yugoslavia, is preserved in the State Archives in Zadar (Drzavni Arhiv u Zadru) in the Tvornica F. Drioli Fund, and has been catalogued by the archivist Marijan Maroja.[14] The archive as a whole not only documents the history of the factory, its development over seven generations of entrepreneurs and their considerable contribution to the history of Zadar, but lends an insight into historical events that shook the area around the Adriatic.[15] The archive provides an unprecedented resource for historians and archivists from the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 up until the transition of Zadar to Yugoslav sovereignty in 1947, covering the various periods of Austrian, French and Italian domination.[16]The maraschino industry had played a major role in the history of the city of Zadar and in the aftermath of the war, production activities were resumed. Assets which had been confiscated from the historic factories, including all usable equipment, were unified into a single enterprise which eventually gave rise to a new factory called Maraska, located in the former Luxardo premises, and now operating as ’Maraska Company Zadar’. Drioli Fund, and has been catalogued by the archivist Marijan Maroja.[14] The archive as a whole not only documents the history of the factory, its development over seven generations of entrepreneurs and their considerable contribution to the history of Zadar, but lends an insight into historical events that shook the area around the Adriatic.[15] The archive provides an unprecedented resource for historians and archivists from the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 up until the transition of Zadar to Yugoslav sovereignty in 1947, covering the various periods of Austrian, French and Italian domination.[16]The maraschino industry had played a major role in the history of the city of Zadar and in the aftermath of the war, production activities were resumed. Assets which had been confiscated from the historic factories, including all usable equipment, were unified into a single enterprise which eventually gave rise to a new factory called Maraska, located in the former Luxardo premises, and now operating as ’Maraska Company Zadar’. Racing will start off with a hybrid schedule of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday racing in April moving to the full schedule of Monday through Thursday in May. Post times of 2:25 p.m. will be held Monday through Wednesday while Thursdays will adopt a post time of 3:25 p.m.
“We worked off our successful schedule from 2020 in cooperation with our horsemen’s groups to determine the best possible days of the week for racing for both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing,” said Eric Halstrom, vice president and general manager of racing. “We feel we have found our niche during the week in those mid-afternoon start times. By moving Thursdays an hour later, we hope to attract the after-work crowd, which allows us to hold some fun events for the on-track racing guests and also puts us in an even better spot on the national simulcasting scene.”
The Indiana Derby race alone garnered $1,026,395, which was a single race record for the track. The four-day race period also marked the best week ever in the 18-year history of racing for Indiana Grand with a total of $13,176,192 wagered.
A total of eight Saturdays will also be included on the schedule with Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing held on Saturday, May 1, which is Kentucky Derby Day, and Saturday, Oct. 30, which will be Indiana Champions Day. Post time for the two Saturdays featuring Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is set for 12 p.m.

The corporation took over management of the neighboring Horseshu Club in 1964. Cactus Petes came under the partial control of Ray Neilsen of Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1967. Neilsen’s construction company had built many of the structures at Cactus Pete’s. Neilsen’s son, Craig, assumed control of day-to-day operations upon the elder Neilsen’s death in 1971. Craig H. Neilsen became sole owner in 1984.
A November 1985 automobile accident left Craig H. Neilsen a quadriplegic, but he continued to lead the company and expanded it. Neilsen was named “Best Performing CEO” by the American Gaming Association in 2002, and was inducted into the organization’s “Hall of Fame” in 2005.[5] Craig H. Neilsen remained chairman and CEO until his unexpected death on November 19, 2006.
Ray H. Neilsen succeeded his father, serving as co-chairman with John Boushy, who also was promoted from president to CEO at the time of Craig’s death.[6] Boushy resigned in June 2008 and was succeeded by Gordon Kanofsky, who previously served as the company’s executive vice president, and now holds the dual role of CEO and vice chairman. Ray H. was named chairman at the same time.[7][8]

In 2006, the Ameristar brand debuted after an $80 million renovation and expansion project that included additional covered parking; and announced details of its planned 33-story hotel and spa. Ameristar officially opened its new Casino Resort Spa complex October 2009 to become the first destination resort casino in Colorado. The property’s $230 million expansion included a 33-story luxury hotel and day spa, an enclosed rooftop swimming pool and 15,000 square feet (1,400 m2) of meeting and event space. The 33-story hotel featuring 536 rooms and 64 suites became the tallest structure between Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver.
Ameristar also completed the acquisition of the Resorts East Chicago casino in East Chicago, Indiana from Resorts International Holdings in 2007. It was rebranded Ameristar Casino Hotel East Chicago in June 2008. An outdoor summer concert series promoted the rebranding, and featured Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and Reba McEntire.[14]
In 2010, Ameristar announced plans to renovate all of Ameristar East Chicago’s 280 superior guest rooms and 10 luxury suites; and to add 100 rooms and a fitness center to Ameristar Kansas City’s existing luxury hotel. The addition will complement the property’s existing 184 rooms and hotel lobby, which were extensively renovated in September 2006.
In Massachusetts, where casinos were legalized in November 2011,[15] Ameristar applied for the one gaming license allotted to Western Massachusetts, proposing to build a $910-million hotel and casino.[16] It acquired a 41-acre site in East Springfield, a former Westinghouse plant, for $16 million.[17] In November 2012, however, Ameristar withdrew its proposal in the face of competing bids from MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming,[18] saying that city officials were more likely to endorse a downtown casino.[19]
In March 2012, Ameristar agreed to acquire Creative Casinos, developer of the proposed Mojito Pointe casino resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for $32.5 million.[20] Ameristar planned to spend at least $500 million on the resort, and to open it in mid-2014.Philanthropy[edit]
Following the death of Craig H. Neilsen, his estate endowed the foundation in his name. Ameristar regularly partners with the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation to support the rehabilitation of individuals suffering from spinal cord injuries and disease. Ray H. Thankfully this poker room is basically in my back yard. I’m just getting my feet wet playing in a casino, more than in home games. They have a good spread of affordable tourneys and nice dealers. If you ever get to play at Duke’s table, take it all in!! He is a great guy and an amazing character, if you will. The floor men are all knowledgeable and polite as well. The only thing I don’t like, is all the smokers linger right outside the entrance. All in all, I really enjoy visiting Seneca Niagara.Just Plain More Fun
